Kia Over There is a media project that tells the story of the fishing community Kia and highlights the environmental issues it faces. Through film and photography, Kia Over There looks to capture the relationship we have with our oceans and the forces that threaten to sever that connection.
Kia is a small island that sits adjacent to the world’s third longest coral, barrier reef. Having little natural fresh water, Kia’s population relies solely on fishing to sustain life; however, coupled with the detriment due to climate change, commercial overfishing threatens to deplete Kia’s way of life. The Kians recognize their plight and have made efforts to find alternative forms of income as well as to engage in local conservation projects, but will it be enough to preserve their lifestyle?
